Another is I

Another is I explores our relationship with the living world; reflecting on the evolutionary continuity of species and microorganisms that we are not aware of, but with which we live.

Filmed within the geology laboratory of Claude Bernard University, Lyon, Another is I follows a young woman as she explores their mineral collections, moving between classification drawers, research aisles, and memories of a visit to Boolagoorda. We are privy to her inner narrative as she speculates about one's presence in the world in relation to nature, and the impossibility of independence amongst living forms.

The auto-fictional film oscillates between techno-scientific references and fiction, and between rationality and spirituality, without either setting them in opposition or in a hierarchy; it evolved from research into Boolagoorda (Hamelin Pool), North Western Australia, the sovereign land of the Malgana people and the site of the oldest living fossils on Earth called stromatolites.

The artist wishes to pay tribute to the Malgana and Nhanda peoples, the traditional custodians of the land and sea in and around Boolagorda (Hamelin Pool) and Gutharraguda (Shark Bay). She acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and pays her respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Another is I was produced for the exhibition Boolagoorda - 2021 - Madeleine-Lambert Art Centre - Vénissieux, France.
